Burt Munro: Offerings to the God of Speed (1971) Part 1

The World's Fastest Indian

Uploaded on Feb 11, 2007

the story of New Zealander Burt Munro who set the land-speed record at Bonneville in 1967 by a 1920 motorcycle. A great, inspiring movie.

Herbert James "Burt" Munro (Bert in his youth) (25 March 1899 – 6 January 1978) was a New Zealand motorcycle racer, famous for setting an under-1,000 cc world record, at Bonneville, 26 August 1967.[2]

This record still stands today. Munro was 68 and was riding a 47-year-old machine when he set his last record.[3]

Working from his home in Invercargill, he worked for 20 years to highly modify the 1920 Indian motorcycle that he had bought that same year. Munro set his first New Zealand speed record in 1938 and later set seven more.

He travelled to compete at the Bonneville Salt Flats, attempting to set world speed records. During his ten visits to the salt flats, he set three speed records, one of which still stands today.

His efforts, and success, are the basis of the motion picture The World's Fastest Indian (2005), starring Anthony Hopkins, and an earlier 1971 short documentary film Burt Munro: Offerings to the God of Speed,[4] both directed by Roger Donaldson.

Early life

Munro was born in 1899 in Invercargill. His twin sister died at birth[2] and Munro grew up on a farm in Edendale, east of Invercargill.

Munro's interest in speed began at a young age, riding the family's fastest horse across the farm, despite the complaints of his father.

Trips via train to the port at Invercargill were a rare source of excitement, and the arrival of cars, motorcycles and aircraft added to Burt's eagerness to join the world outside of his farm.

As Munro's family discouraged his endeavours outside of farm life, he became constantly bored with daily routine, and at the outbreak of World War I, he intended to go to war as soon as he was old enough, for a chance to see the world.[1]

Munro remained on the family farm until the end of WWI, when his father sold the farm. At that time, Munro worked on the Otira Tunnel construction until recalled to work with his father on a newly purchased farm.[1]

After this he became a professional speedway rider, but returned home to the family farm at the start of the Great Depression.

Finding work as a motorcycle salesman and mechanic, he raced motorcycles and rose to the top of the New Zealand motorcycle scene, racing on Oreti Beach and later in Melbourne, Australia.[1]

After World War II, Munro and his wife divorced, and he subsequently gave up work to reside in a lock-up garage.[5]

Challenges

Munro's Indian Scout was very early off the production line, being only the 627th Scout to leave the American factory.[6] The bike had an original top speed of 55 mph (89 km/h).[2] But this did not satisfy Munro, so in 1926 he decided to start modifying his beloved Indian.

The biggest two challenges for Munro to overcome while modifying his bike were his lack of money and the fact that he worked full-time as a motorcycle salesman.[citation needed]

He would often work overnight on his bikes (he had a 1936 Velocette MSS as well), then he would go to work in the morning, having had no sleep the night before.

Because Munro was a man of modest means, he would often make parts and tools himself instead of having them professionally built. For example, he would cast parts in old tins, make his own barrels, pistons, flywheels, etc.

His micrometer (a precision measuring instrument) was an old spoke.[2]

In its final stages, the Indian's displacement was 950 cc (as built it was 600 cc) and was driven by a triple chain drive system.[2]

The "Munro Special," as Munro called his bike, is now owned by a motorcycle enthusiast in New Zealand's South Island, and is on display at E Hayes & Sons, Invercargill.[7]

There is also a second motorcycle purported to be the original "Munro Special" in Te Papa Museum (Wellington).[8]

Who is Sinbad the Sailor Man? Well wouldn't we all like to know, who we really are?

He is nobody special yet, at least not in the writing industry. He was born Donald Beres Jr. in Hammond Indiana,  to Carol Ann (Muskin) Beres and Donald Beres of Pennsylvania.

Donald's Mother divorced his natural father and married Wayne L. Douglas. The couple thought it easier to conceal the fact of his mother's divorce from Donald's natural father.

He was raised in Hobart, Indiana as Donnie Douglas until about the age of sixteen. When he found out that his mother had him by her first husband.

Donnie found this out shortly after attending Hobart Junior High. He took this news in stride but did not realize the damage that this and the lies that followed about his natural father and half sister would eventually unfold later in life.

He attended until his Sophomore year. He Letter in Football and Wrestling during his Freshmen year.

In 1980 he left before graduation to go to Portage Adult Night School so he could join the US Navy with two of his childhood friends; on the Navy's Buddy System.

But because of budget cuts that semester. Donnie was delayed six months and missed going through Boot Camp with his two Buddies.

As a result he would no longer qualify for the twenty yrs and out full retirement. Instead he would need to do thirty years to receive that option. Donnie's two buddies both took full advantage of that option.

On Aug 23rd 1985 Donald was Honorable Discharged from the US Navy.

Donald met Donna L. Se Doris who was seven years his junior in 1998 and in Aug 25th 1990 they were married. They had three children together until their Divorce in  March of 2001.

Donald is still a divorced middle aged man, who has three great kids, one curly headed girl and two boys. Donald is the Grandfather of two one of each a girl and a boy with more on the way.

He is a US Navy Veteran, a would be Poet, a soon to be freelance writer, he hopes.

He is a dyslectic, he is a dreamer of dreams and an inventor of things, he is a decent pool player, a certified Advanced Open Water SCUBA diver, although he hasn't dove since 1990

He still holds, Certifications in Night diving, Deep diving, Search and Recovery diving, and he is an Underwater Vehicle Specialist, an ex-welder, and a guy who likes to ride Motorcycles. Donald likes to play Eight ball and Nine ball Billiards and has shown a growing interest in One Pocket.

He started writing Poetry way back in Night School 1980. Donald started after a short falling out with his Mother over being lied to about his true identity.  He started writing again, about six months after his divorce. From his wife of ten and a half years.Which he strongly took as a betrayal by his first true love.

He has been writing off and on ever since. He has had several Back Surgeries and others most on his lower back.  Although he was disabled December 1998  and has been on Disability since. He has made several attempts to return to full duty work, but failed and remains on Disability to this day.

He has a very bad short term memory problem, brought on by almost nine years of prescription drug use, mostly pain killers. He has bouts of depression from time to time and has contemplated and attempted suicide twice.

These attempts were early on in his disability. While he was on strong Pain Killers. The ones that one should also be put on anti-depressants with. Donald was not! He attributes his attempts on his life to this lack of proper medication.

Among these annoying problems he has other small annoying ticks and clicks that keep him from holding down any normal nine to five job for too long.

One of his attempts to return to work was as a semi truck driver. He drove for about five months but, his eyes started to fail due to high blood pressure and now he has severe night blindness, so he can't drive semi truck at night any more. He drove a taxi for about five months after getting New Glasses but has since given up on trying to drive commercially.

While Driving over the road his only daughter was Life flighted to Chicago's Children's Hospital from Indiana by helicopter. Donald dropped a load of rubber and drove from Saint Louis Missouri, He stated to his dispatcher the thing is floored and It wasn't stopping until I got there or It burnt up!

His daughter was later diagnosed with Type One Childhood Diabetes.

Donald is back to writing poetry short stories, and trying different Inter Net jobs, which he has not yet mastered any of those either.

There you have it! Donald States that he is an average guy. With no place to go but up! Because if he gets any lower, they'll have to put him down and in the ground.

"By The Grace of GOD There Go I"

One of Donald's Favorite Bible Quotes

Another of his favorites is

"Unto Death Do We Part"

Subway Tracks The Dough Rollers~ "Mansion On A Hill" Life Rolls a Long No Matter What Happens the Day Before.

I was posting some awhile back; for a new Blog I had created

Master Mind Groups The Mansions on the Hill

As of late I am living out of my Van again. I thought things were getting better but Life It happens. Boy Times are tough out here in the real world. First week out of the house and my Uncle past he was like a Father to me. the Next week the rains came. then the computers were hacked. Troubles always come in tree's or greater when It rains It pours. "Life Is a Cliche"

Just to update ya all I got stuff coming as long as the world doesn't suddenly implode, but for now a few clips of Trikes from all over the world will soon follow in the coming posts.

I was in my cousin camper but the rains came and my little campground turned into a small lake front property. The bass from  my Uncle's near by pond were feasting upon worms in this make shift lake of about six acres from 6ft to 2ft deep.

I wanted to grab the flip cam but the lighting kept me from trying to retrieve my cameras until the storms were completely gone. They past but came back a day later and right now the sky is rumbling and the house lights are a flickering.

I was okay with it at first. But then after a couple of days the giant mud puddle began to stick of dead worms and vegetation. There for minute I was ready to break out the fishing nets and catch me some bass and blue gills and have a fish fry but the area was to large and I was to slow to catch the suckers.

I was trying to get some posting in with my cousin new computer during the stormy season but It got hacked and then so did my old Laptop. I got her all cleaned up mow and I am hoping she will keep holding out. That's what I am on now.  So its a slow ride but she's working.Right now the thunder is getting louder and the trees are whipping about.

Here is the yard after two days of draining off and Its suppose to rain again tonight oh shit Its here. Yippee Lucky Me. I hope it passes quickly.

I have also starting a new Venture with Buying and Selling Domain Names wish me luck. I could really use some out here. That is why your seeing Flippa.com ads and Widgets on all my Blogger sites. I am so far behind and only getting further and further behind. Because of Mother Nature and people with nothing better to do then mess with others people computers.

Oh well If It keeps up this bad streak of luck. I should hit the finish line soon for all the back stepping I have been doing. Can't keep a good Dog down La, la, la.
